Mr. Stephen J. Melvin is a Partner in the firm’s Real
Estate & Development practice group. He has
significant experience in the representation of
International and Bahamian Property Developers
inclusive of Hotel, Marina and Resort Development
(mixed use projects). He has been involved in all
aspects of the master planning of a number of
Resorts and mixed use Developments as well as all
legal services related to Bahamas Government
regulation. He has been involved in negotiations
with the Bahamas Government as relates to Heads of
Agreements and Hotel Encouragement Act Concessions.
Mr. Melvin has also specialised in the sale and
acquisition of a number of the country’s boutique
hotels and dealt with all related legal services
thereto. He has acted on behalf of numerous high net
worth private clients in respect of their
acquisition of private islands and cays as well as
private residences. He also has experience in the
administration of local and international estates
specialising in the resealing of Grants issued out
of both common law and civil
jurisdictions.
Mr. Melvin also
specialises in immigration law with an emphasis
on permanent residency and work permit applications.
Mr. Melvin graduated from Bentley College in Boston with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and
Economics. He later earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B)
degree from the University of Westminster in London,
England and in 1996 was called to the Bar of England
and Wales. Mr. Melvin was admitted to the Bahamas
Bar in 1997 and is an active member of its Real
Estate section.
Mr. Melvin joined Higgs and Johnson as an Associate
in 1998 and became a Partner in 2006. He is
currently the Nassau head of the firm’s Abaco office
and has been involved with a number of Abaco’s
Resorts and Developments.
